Routines & Rituals

While putting on my trainers this morning, a memory transported me back to my deployments to the Middle East. Each morning had a routine as I climbed out of bed, a routine and ritual that I practiced. Before putting on my boots, I would tip them upside down and bang them vigorously against our billet door that led outside.

Why? Well, scorpions had a habit of making a bed in them overnight. Black scorpions were common, and getting stung by one was not a wise way to start the day. This was the morning routine that I adhered to strictly back then.

This memory got me thinking of another morning routine that I have employed over the years: starting my day in prayer, reading my devotional, and spending time in the Bible. Just like my mornings in the Middle East, this routine of prayer and investing time with God has served me well, keeping me safe from the sting of unseen dangers. I have found that building a routine in my spiritual life allows me to align myself with God’s perspective on life and gives me insight for the challenges and decisions I will face in the day ahead.

What routines and rituals are you employing in life right now?
